You It!

My new search engine would be very similar to Google. This search engine would be more personalized, however, according to your interests based on your browser history and cookies. So if someone were to look up “Funky Cabinet” and that person has a history of looking for Alice in Wonderland, then anything that could merge the two would come up. This is a very general search, in the example given, however the idea should be that my search engine and your history work together to curate what you want to find. This would be called “You It.” I named it this because it can also be used a verb, like Google, and someone can say to their friend “just You It and you can find it.” It’s simple and easy to use! You It is designed to be personalized which is why I wanted to incorporate YOU into IT. Also, I’m not good at sketches at all but I imagined it to look like Google except the words read “You It” and the background would be customizable to any images the user wanted.

Are the tools of digital media impeding or expanding our knowledge?

Digital media is constantly expanding our knowledge, but when false information spreads on platforms like Facebook or Instagram, or even reputable sites, it does impede our knowledge. We need to be careful in where we get our information from and double check the validity before spreading the same information that may do more harm than good. I think if used properly, for research and experiments, then digital media is more useful. It depends more on the user, than it does on the content.

App Idea and Article Review by Michael Li

Through my personal experiences with social media, it seems like social media can be both a blessing and a curse. A hundred years ago, one could take a picture and save it if they choose. If they didn’t want it or if the photo was very embarrassing, one could simply rip it up and throw it away. Now, if one were to post a picture that is embarrassing, it can really haunt them in the real world. Those pictures that are put online, those will be on the internet forever. For as long as you live ,those pictures will be out on the internet forever. Even if you delete it on your facebook profile, someone somewhere or facebook themselves will have a copy of it. Stacy Snyder had to deal with this herself as a photo she took and posted came and bit her. She took a picture of herself in a pirate costume and the dean found out. At this point, there was absolutely nothing she could have done, even if she deleted it off of MySpace, the dean or somebody else would have had a copy.

Another thing I want to address is cancel culture. Cancel culture is when a mob on the internet tries to blacklist someone from jobs, places, etc. Basically banishing someone. If you decided to make a joke about blackface like Shane Dawson ten years ago, people would take your livelihood away today. My point is, the internet has made it so that our lives can be completely uploaded to the internet and that people in the future will focus on and judge us based on the poor choices we make instead of looking at our lives as a whole. The fact that people post about 70 pieces of content per month just shows how much we rely on the internet.

That said, the internet isn’t all bad, it really helps us to not forget anything. We will never forget what happened on 9/11 as it is on the internet forever. We have so many pictures of it and we make posts every year. A hundred years from now, we will still remember 9/11 but we might not remember what happened 300 years from then because there was no internet 200 years ago. In fact, as technology advances, we might even upload more.

Amazon, if all bad, can do some things right. As stated in the ‘applefritter’ article, “If the wishlist creator specifies a shipping address, someone else can even purchase the book on Amazon and have it shipped directly as a gift. The wishlist creator’s city and state are made public on the wishlist, but the street address remains private”. This is a plus for the internet, the internet is a scary place but this can really help people. If someone whole lives in a less fortunate place wants to read the latest harry potter book, they can show this wish list to their family members and friends and I am sure someone would buy it for them. It really gives a voice to people who need help and connects people who can give and those who need.

APP:

I personally would like to create an app for introverted people like me. I really don’t like seeing people because I am very nervous when it comes to meeting new people. So this app would include things one likes and would enter them into that community. For example, if I like video games (For Honor), I would type it into the app and it would show me that community. I would then feel less pressure to make friends because we all have something in common. We would go from there.

Am I doing this right?

Google 2.0

Honestly there isn’t much I’d change about Google, so here is my Google 2.0. The biggest change I’d like to make to Google is adding a filters button. Everyday, people use Google to search for information regarding literally anything you can think of. Imagine having loads of information in the palm of your hands, why wouldn’t you just use it right? The problem is, there’s a TON of information. Whenever I start feeling sick or have a body pain, the first thing I do is Google my symptoms. If you’ve done this, you know sometimes you get the craziest answers and almost always, the Internet will tell you you have cancer. Now, thankfully for me this isn’t triggering but for others it can be. I think it would very helpful if Google had a page where you could insert your triggers or mental health disorder and Google will filter out anything that can hinder you.

I also added that I’m not too sure what the “I’m feeling lucky” button does but I would like Google 2.0 to let you decide a subject you’d like to learn more of. It could be anything (that cannot cause harm to you or anyone). You would do your own research at your own time and google will track it (google tracking your information-scary I know). Then in order to test yourself to see if you’ve retained vital information, you’d press the “I”m feeling lucky” button and google will create a small and fun quiz for you. At the end of the quiz, Google 2.0 could even give you suggestions of what you could do now with your new skill/information or where you can go to enhance these.

Lastly, I’d like to have a personalization button. Once you start searching on Google, it goes to its uniform white background. It would be nice to have your own customization and it would follow through in all of your searches unless you say otherwise.

Again, I’m a huge fan of google so these are the small changes I would make.

KickBall And Views

This is my google sports search engine for everything basketball.

I would invite basketball fans and lovers to try out the new sears bar. Get all the Nba streams so people can watch for free legal or illegally but we will keep that on the download. Also post all the Games that can be found on the internet.  It will also include College basketball games old and new as well as streamed. This would be a pure basketball search engine for basketball lovers.

It would be better because Nba streams can be very hard to come by for obvious reasons, and YouTube can offer only a handful or old basketball games. This search engine would be able to find any game that was recorded on the television and even the radio.

Are the tools of digital media impending or expanding our knowledge?

The digital media  in my opinion can do both, its not necessarily on the tools that’s presented in the media but more on us, the consumer determines whether it can expand or impend our knowledge. Some people use the tools for strictly research and information others choose to use it for purely entertainment and the other half use it for both. In my opinion theirs a lot of variables that needs to be assessed to get the proper answer.

Digital search engine

Search engines are very unique way of the internet and something that has made its way into big money. If I was to create a search engine I would want it to be something like reddit. Reddit is a community where people can post links , ask questions, meet people, and build communities. However one of the most important things on reddit is the post with the most up votes get shown first. That should be how search engines are because first off it would ended up finding the solution fastest, and in a way make people more involved into my website.
One of the things that I personally don’t like about these search engines is a lot of the first links that are shown are company’s or websites paying to be there. Yeah it might be a good solution but is it really the best one I’m looking for? I want to make it where the community are my devs and together we chose whats best. Together we’ll chose what goes first what goes last. That way we kind of have this common ground and it’s not just who has the most money.
Now I totally get from a business stand point that it’s not the best way To always make profit. However in my opinion the internet is at its best when you can actually have a reliable website and the people are in charge. People who are internet nerds per say would love something like this. A search engine that the people control.
Furthermore making a search engine like this would also help the small guys grow. Everybody nowadays what’s to make money of the internet wether it be by blog or streamer or anything, and a search engine such as this would help. Having a website where people can really decide want to put up first can help find potential in the websites or people that can actually be successful.

To be honest it matters nobody and I mean nobody goes past the first page on google, yahoo, or even bing. It just doesn’t happen and to be on that first page is like marketing yourself made in heaven. Just imagine the possibilities for somebody from being a top choice on a very frequent google search, to answer it endless. Therefore to have it where people decide and it’s not pay to win is atleast in my mind Would make a tremendous search engine.

F.P – Digital Media/Search Media

Search Engine:
If I was to create a search engine, I would make it very interactive. For example, I would have a 3 buttons below the search bar saying “news, weather and trending”. That way you can instantly check out what’s trending/what people are looking up, a weather button where when you hover over it it tells you the weather, and the news button to check your daily briefing. When you look something up, there is also a word of the day and quote of the day next to what you look up as well. It would be called “Letmelook”

Reading:
Digital media is the main reason why information spreads because it’s part of our daily lives and we use it for a lot of things. Digital media is any form of media that uses electronic devices for distribution. This form of media can be created, viewed, modified and distributed via electronic devices. Digital media is used through software, video games, videos, websites, social media, and online advertising. It’s good to rely on digital media, but at the same time it is not. It’s not because if we start to believe that digital media is real life, then we start to lose in touch with real life. I agree and disagree with this post.

Search Engine and Reading

Search Engine:

The title of my search engine would be called CreateIY which would mean create it yourself. This search engine would lets users who make an account use all the resources the account provides and give users the chance to search up and upload different projects, recipes, and home decor ideas to the site and also gives them the chance to try others peoples creations. The search engine would also use your location and connect you to other CreateIY-ers that live in your area. To ensure users safety, we would use a software that will make sure that real users with good intentions are using the site. One thing that will make this site even more unique is giving users the option to create their own page and eventually their own website to further show off their unique creations.

Reading:

I believe for the most part that the tools of digital media is responsible for expanding out knowledge because it is key to our everyday life where we use if for pretty much anything. Our digital tools are responsible for keeping us on track and prepared for the day and as time goes on, it becomes more and more beneficial to our lives. But there comes a point to where it can even be close to ruining ones life forever. One example where we see digital media ruining lives comes from the New York Times article where a woman named Stacy Snyder’s life came crashing down after she was denied her teaching degree days before her graduation due to old pictures that appeared on her social media page. These photos which had nothing to do with her career and honestly didn’t give her a “bad look” since its normal to go out for drinks caused damage to her career that could not be fixed. Overall, the main idea I took from this article was its bet to be careful and not post everything on social media because nothing is ever deleted from there. I do still believe that digital media tools do help us a lot with our daily lives and keeps us entertained aside from the fact that it can also cause short attention spans unfortunately.

The Tools of Digital Media

I believe that the tools of digital media is doing both impeding and expanding our knowledge. The reason why I say it is impeding it is because one relies on media for everything. To be honest the last time I believe I actually checked on a family member in person would be a few month ago. When having media in our hands we may say we are checking on people but physically we are not. It is like what the New York Times article, “The Web Means the World is Ending”, “now that so many people use a single platform to post constant status updates and photos about their private and public activities, the idea of a home self, a work self, a family self and a high-school-friends self has become increasingly untenable.” One has created a life on the internet that cannot be made in physical world. Another thing would be like privacy. There are instances and sayings in which people would say be careful what you put out in the Internet; anyone can see it. In the article “Data Mining 111: Finding Subversives with Amazon Wishlist”, Tom Oward says “Amazon Wishlist lets anyone bookmark books for later purchase. By default, these lists are public and available to anybody who searches by name. If the Wishlist creator specifies a shipping address, someone else can even purchase the book on Amazon and have it shipped directly as a gift.” One is not safe even in websites they believe that can be harmless to their safety. Then when I say that the tools of digital media are expanding our knowledge is because everything is from our fingertips. One is able to speak without having any restrictions. In the article, “The Lo(n)g Revolution: The Blogosphere as an Alternative Public Sphere?”, it said “Blogging breaks down the barriers between public and privates’ spaces and allows elected representatives to put across their individuality and personality.”

If I Were to Create a Search Engine

If I were to design my own search engine it would look like a mixture of Yahoo’s homepage, which is populated with news and information. That news and information would be curated news and content chosen specifically for you based on your search results and topics you care about. It would act like the google discovery page and google news with topics you follow. I like google doodles and would love to have a new design daily as well. I would call this search engine KEYS (Keep Educating YourSelf)!

I would get people to use it by advertising it. The commercials would appeal to people by letting them know that they can always “keep educating themselves”. It would be important because it would get people news on a desktop as well as a mobile device. Currently Google’s Discovery Page is only accessible via mobile. Mobile devices tent to lead to addiction lately for myself. I have more control over random scrolling and can focus on tasks better on desktop devices.

Google Opt Out Feature Lets Users Protect Privacy By Moving To Remote Village by The Onion

🤣😆🤣 I remember explaining satire to my older mother, and sister, in which I just gave up. They still don’t understand that it’s a joke, that The Onion’s angle is making fun of things in a sarcastic way. I can understand why people can find a source like The Onion, and not understand that it is purely a joke, and label it fake news. Siting The Onion as the source is equivalent to siting worldstarhiphop.com as a source. Unfortunately, there are people among-st us who don’t understand sarcasm and would label The Onion as fake news, when in reality it’s comedy.

The Web Means the End of Forgetting

I started going online and was introduced to the internet at 11 years old. When I was introduced to the internet it was with the same notion as stranger danger. You never know who is watching you online. From a young age I have been using a pseudonym online. If yo

u type in my government name you only find professional things. When you type in my pseudonym, that’s where I actually exist online. My address was only publicly online due to Con Edison. As I’m thinking of possibly pursing politics, and as my friends go on with their ventures, I make it a task to not post anything that would jeopardize any of us. Pictures of us drinking or smoking etc. don’t exist. I don’t even trust cloud storage. I have a personal NAS, Network Attached Storage Drive(s), that I share with my family members.

After violent encounters in my neighborhood, I try not to post accurate current pictures of myself and post my locations. Majority of my pictures are dated so certain individuals won’t identify myself and others around me based off of neighborhood affiliations and retaliations.

Luckily, I haven’t had any negative online reputation situations yet. But I love the idea of the ability to take things offline. I believe Facebook and social media pages should be off limits for employers. Expiration dates is the reason why snapchat took off!

Data Mining: Finding Subversives with Amazon Wishlists

After learning about things done through Snowden, and after 9/11 I am okay with the government accessing digital data. The only thing horrible they’ll find on me is that I stream movies online, but so does everybody else! I generally don’t do anything I’m not supposed to a

nymore online. I stopped downloading music/movies. I stopped torrenting software etc. I only broke copyright laws due to lack of finances. Now that finances are accessible to me, I don’t mind paying for things.

The Lo(n)g Revolution: The Blogosphere as an alternative Public Sphere? By Anna Notaro

I agree with the quote by Raymond Williams, “general television through commercial advertising to centralized information and data-processing systems, the technology that is now or is becoming availablecan be used to affect, to alter, and in some cases to control our whole social process”. As the population grows, that population needs to be controlled, otherwise chaos would erupt. This is why ideas like net neutrality are even debated. I don’t think the government should intervene with the internet and throttle certain websites leaving them at a data cap. The web should be free.

I feel like only big companies would be able to afford the fees if any and small blogs won’t have a chance to grow or emerge. Imagine a web without Facebook or Netflix because the tech giants didn’t have funds to accommodate their sites. On the other hand, I feel like those same sites would be advertised for control of the mind. There is a really good documentary called Century of Self that talks about manipulation and control of the public.

Are the tools of digital media impeding or expanding our knowledge?

I feel like digital media has definitely made us reliant on our numerous devices to ‘remember’ things for us. For example, if I were to ever forget my friend’s birthday, I could easily check my calendar if I ever logged it into my phone, or check one of their social media accounts where birthdays are usually presented on a personal profile.  The New York Times says, “ …The fact that the Internet never seems to forget is threatening, at an almost existential level, our ability to control our identities; to preserve the option of reinventing ourselves and starting anew; to overcome our checkered pasts…”. Additionally the same goes for things like phone and email contact lists, the average person wouldn’t have information like that memorized. I would say that digital media aids in the expansion of our knowledge because true knowledge isn’t memorization but understanding. Technological advancements as of recently,  like iCloud storage, where all of one’s information is easily transferred from device to device, helps to release our minds from the strain of having to store loads of information and rather bring that information to us when needed be. Making problem-solving and brainstorming easier when its easier to track multiple bits of information and processes.
